Longtime New Jersey resident Harvey Bell is a graduate of Texas A&M University. Supportive of community organizations, Harvey Bell donates to Covenant House, an organization that provides housing and long-term support for young people facing homelessness.
According to a 2017 study by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago, 4.2 million young people experience some form of homelessness every year. While the reasons for this differ and include abandonment, mental health issues, and abuse, the physical and mental effects on the children are the same. Covenant House uses a three-part process to help kids get off the streets. In the first part, outreach teams are sent to connect with young people living on the streets. The outreach teams offer warm blankets and food to the children in need while telling them about Covenant House. The second part of the process is crisis care. At shelters, children are offered warm meals, medical care, showers, and safe beds. The goal is to address their immediate needs and earn their trust. The final part of the process is long-term support. Once the urgent needs of the children have been met, long-term support leads them to self-sufficiency. This support includes continuing education, job readiness, and transitional housing programs.
