Longtime New Jersey resident Harvey Bell has maintained licensure as a financial advisor since 1981. In addition to his work in finance, Harvey Bell maintains membership with organizations such as the Friars Club.
The origins of New York City’s Friars Club can be traced back to 1904, when a group of press agents banded together to root out corruption among Broadway theater representatives. Today, the club, which consists mostly of comics and other celebrities, is best known for its ribald roasts. A roast involves friends and professional comics making jokes (typically risqué or excessively mean in nature) at the expense of the “honored guest.” Proceedings are managed by the roastmaster and are held in good spirits, with each roast ending with a few kind, sincere words to the guest. The first official Friars Club roast was held in 1950, in honor of comedians Sam Levenson and Joe E. Lewis, though the tradition extends back as far as the 1911 Friars Club Frolics. A Friars Club roast has been held every year since, with roasts being televised on Comedy Central from 1998 through 2002 (at which point the television channel began arranging its own roasts). Friars Club members roasted during this period included Drew Carey, Jerry Stiller, Rob Reiner, and Chevy Chase. More recent Friars Club roasts have featured Jack Black (with roastmaster Bob Saget) and Betty White (with roastmaster Barbara Walters).
